10 Gifts of Maggie Henriquez CEO - Champagne Krug.

Picture
1. Could you explain your personality? Strengths and weaknesses.

I have a strong, determined, predictable, very passionate, very human, very generous. I have a desire permanent learning, I am curious, sensitive and very close people. I know what I want and I'm not ready to let go easily unless you are convinced that my idea is not there good, which is quite possible because I try to always be in openness and listening.

For the weak points, I can be stubborn, too passionate and very hard at times and unknowingly hurting others. With the years I have less tolerance than before. Also I love the generosity therefore to give, but it is also necessary to know how to receive and there I am not very strong.

2. Could you describe where you were born and what region do you live in?

What kind of traditions do you have? I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, I live in Paris and I do not have a lot of traditions but I still have a few, for example, I do everything by bike, I almost always prepare my lunch, a salad and I like to play sports. The country that I would like to visit this is India.

3. What kind of hobbies do you have?

A job you've dreamed of doing when you were a kid. A person or a character that you admire when you were young. My hobbies are sports, music, theater, the Opera and reading. The job I dreamed of is exactly what I do now the only thing i miss is doing good to others, an old dream is to be able to actively participate in an association in the social. I have a very special admiration for Margareth Thatcher, can be her first and last name that I always changed to "Teacher".

4. What do you think is the worst enemy in the wine world right now?

Forgetting the purpose of wine. Wine was created to give some pleasure. Add too much technicality to the description of the wine is its great enemy because it prevents the consumer from following its sensations instead of rationalizing its composition to show others what we know about wine instead of having the freedom to just feel it.

5. How could you possibly fight against the enemies of wine world? What if you could have some power magic, which would be?

I fight for my place, never allowing any of my teams to describe Krug in technical language, on the contrary, we chose the music to translate the sensations of our Champanges. If I had magical power I would make it disappear all the technicality of the vocabulary to describe the wines.

6. Which champagne myth will you deny?

That Champagne is only to celebrate, that it should be tasted in flutes and that we can shake the bottle and water people to party. Do not throw away the right products and the right ones Champagne can accompany different moments, from the aperitif at the end of the meal and should be enjoyed in a wine glass White.

7. Your best experience with champagne?

Be the president of Krug!

8. What is your favorite champagne and why?

Krug Grande Cuvée because it is the most generous expression of Champagne. No matter what my state of mind, I always find a few things that connect with my emotions. So very special!

9. Another accord with champagne that is not food.

Music and Champagne chords. Well-chosen music can become a great tasting experience. Yes and tastings are next to each other in the brain and the vibration of music has an effect on tasting, first of all allowing the person to connect with their sensations and afterwards with good volume, the ability to perceive aromas and above all flavors will increase if we taste with music which was chosen or composed for Champagne.

10. If you could send a message to yourself, but when you were a little girl, what would you say?

Not to be in a bad mood, to enjoy life and thank every day. When I was little I was always bad mood and I didn't like people, amazing but true !

"My Christmas present for all of you, a wonderful story about my favorite winemaker and her wines"

Vincenza Folgheretti

Picture
I was born and raised in Sicily, in a town near Palermo, Tuscany then adopted me. My passion for wine was born when I was a child, when my father asked me to taste the new wine. I did not understand, I was too young, but I remember the great amazement when I realized that every year was different and my father told me "it is nature that decides, if you respect you with great results" , together with me grew up the curiosity to discover what was happening in that glass not like now, but with clearer ideas, I can say "we must have respect", only in this way can we really make the difference. My wines I do not want them to be designed or projected, the character of a child can not be thought of and designed, but is accompanied along the path of life and is what I do with my wines, accompany them along their path.
Today I am a consultant of more than 10 companies, each of which manages to get excited with their personality and their characteristics, every year is a new pleasant surprise and every year is always the beginning of a new path.
Classical music is part of my life, I love the strong emotions that manages to give note after note, it is my adventure companion.

MANRICO - IGT Toscana Syrah, Syrah 100%

Picture
Manual harvest in small boxes. The grapes are immediately de-stemmed and placed in steel tanks where they ferment. The time of maceration and the number of replacements are not defined and the tasting continues to define the choices
The wine has an intense ruby red, tending to purple. Very complex on the nose, where the fruity and floral notes are perfectly integrated with the spicy notes of black pepper creating a very interesting olfactory balance. On the palate the tannins are quite present but well ripe. Fresh, long, enveloping and pleasing to the taste.

ARIO - Toscana Vermentino, Vermentino 100%

Only 3000 meters of vineyard from which annually we try to get the maximum of the character that this variety can give. A few bottles, intended for a few "privileged" who appreciate the Vermentino in its most intrinsic characteristics
The harvest takes place manually, in small boxes. The grapes that arrive in the cellar are immediately destemmed and macerated at low temperatures for 2 days. The tasting decides the necessary time.
Once the maceration times are over, the grapes are then pressed. The alcoholic fermentation is carried out in a steel tank at a controlled temperature
The color is straw yellow with greenish reflections, typical of the variety. The nose is fruity and floral, with slight mineral notes. On the palate it confirms the characteristics found on the nose, fresh, well balanced and pleasant, with a varietal ending reminiscent of bitter almond.

Sicilia - DONNAFUGATA

Picture
Someone who identifies a lot in his wines, is a woman winemaker, but also believes in art and wine, with profound thoughts and feminist activism, to make a  perfect wine. José Rallo, responsible for the management control and communication guide, a woman-entrepreneur able to get involved by presenting her wines also as a singer. Receives the Bellisario 2002 Prize for his contribution to the enhancement of female entrepreneurship. The name Donnafugata refers to the novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa the Gattopardo. A name that means "woman on the run" and refers to the story of a queen who found refuge in that part of Sicily where the company vineyards are located today. An event that inspired the company logo: the image of the head of a woman with her hair in the wind that stands out on every bottle.

Mille e Una Notte - Nero d'Avola, Petit Verdot, Syrah e altre uve

Picture
The palace shown on the label is the one where Queen Maria Carolina fled from Naples and was the favorite home of the writer Tomasi di Lampedusa in Santa Margherita Belice. Gabriella Anca Rallo - founder of Donnafugata together with her husband Giacomo - captures the image and embeds it in a sky of "A Thousand and One Nights" full of stars and full of promises. The strong and passionate character has inspired the mâitre chocolatier Ernst Knam in the creation of the "Mille e una Notte and peperoncino" pralines.

I have the honor to present to you Mme. Walch from northern Italy. « Alto Adige » is an autonomous region of Trentino-Alto also called South Tyrol.  25 years ago it was hard to believe that there would be a women representing important vineyards, she told us.  The shortage of women in the practice of wine making was not a reason to keep her from her dreams, on the contrary, it fueled her passion to continue working.  She is also an architect and loves hiking. Now she feels completely satisfied with her accomplishments and we can clearly appreciate her happiness through her wines. This time I tasted :
